About

I struggled with my weight nearly my whole life. After marrying and having two children, I hit my highest weight and lowest self-esteem. I was obese, with high cholesterol, out-of-control sugar and no strength. I knew I had to make a change as a working parent.

I threw myself into reshaping my life around my health. You can read about my 2-year journey below. By the end, I had lost 100 lbs., lowered my cholesterol without medication and learned to love physical activity. More importantly, I had found my calling. I went through my weight-loss journey alone, and I wanted to team up with others who wanted to change their lives. While raising my children and working, I went back to school to get certified to build custom, comprehensive health plans around cardiovascular exercise, strength training and nutritional education. And it all starts with a FREE fitness evaluation.

“After 10 years of failure, I had an epiphany”.

The problem was within me. My thought patterns, my inability to cope with anxiety and stress, my priorities, they all had to change.

“ I found activities that added to my life rather than intruding on it.

The next day, I finally worked up the courage to go for a walk. Carrying over 100 extra pounds, it was no easy task. I was only able to go 10 minutes. But each day after that, I went out again and again, slowly building up my stamina. Eventually, I managed to go an entire mile and then another and then three. I found my outlook shifting as well. With the stress of raising a family and working full-time, I started looking forward to the walks I had once dreaded as much-needed “me” time. I found activities that added to my life rather than intruding on it.

I began to read everything I could about food to learn to manage my diet. Instead of yo-yo dieting, I learned to balance my consumption with more vegetables and fewer fats and carbohydrates. I read about how I had been using food to regulate my emotions and deal with stress and anxiety. I discovered that the foods I had been eating all my life had been triggering cravings and overstimulating my appetite, making it even harder for me to control portions and stick to a healthy plan.

In my first month, I lost 5 lbs., I could walk over a mile and I felt like I had won the lottery! My weight loss took over a year, but it wasn’t the most important part of my transformation. I learned to love moving. Before my journey, I knew nothing about exercise. I had never lifted weights. I didn’t play any sports. I didn’t have any physical activities in my life. After two years, it was a joy to hop on a bike and take a long ride with my husband. That would have been unthinkable before.
I was lucky I could manage my transformation alone, but I knew others would need help. I wanted to spread the way I felt to everyone! So I began taking classes in personal training and nutrition. After gaining certifications from the American Council on Exercise as a Health Coach, Personal Trainer, and Lifestyles and Weight Management Consultant, I launched Fitness by Sheila. Through my company, I pursue my passions of helping clients live healthy, lose weight, get stronger, reduce bad cholesterol, fight high blood pressure, manage Type II diabetes, fight obesity and turn back aging.

Living Healthy

Wellness isn’t a switch that you can flick on and off. I had an epiphany that represented a turning point, but before that was a decade of trial and error (many, many errors) and years of effort. You may be reaching a turning point yourself — maybe a frank conversation with a trusted physician or a FREE fitness evaluation. You have a long road to living healthy, but I’ve walked that path. As a certified lifestyle coach, I can guide you down it.

You may think you hate exercising, but maybe you just hate the type of exercise you’ve done in the past. Did you know that a brisk walk through the park for an hour can burn more calories than 20 minutes of running? Biking can build leg muscles in much the same way as pumping iron without the stress of going to a gym.

Together, we can find activities that integrate easily into your regular life. After the free fitness evaluation, I take clients through a large variety of activities in a NO-JUDGMENT atmosphere. We look for that perfect fit, even if the results surprise the client. In no time, you could find yourself obsessed with racquetball or yoga. I’ll find an activity you look forward to every day rather than dread. Even clients without weight problems could use more activities they love in their lives.

Avoid Mental Traps

I strive to make the biggest impact in my clients’ lives that I can. The best service I can provide for someone is getting them working toward positive, healthy thinking with lifestyle coaching.

My top priority is eliminating negative self-talk. We all have an inner critic, and its claws just get sharper and sharper each year. Letting thoughts that begin with “I can’t” or “I’ll never” take over limits our potential. We stay locked in bad patterns. My WHOLE HEALTH APPROACH gives you the tools to limit negative self-talk and embrace the possible. With realistic goal-setting, “I can’t” won’t even be in your vocabulary, whether you want to lose 50 lbs. or compete in a triathlon.

The whole health approach also tackles emotional wellbeing. To change your lifestyle, you have to change your relationship with food. Too often we unconsciously develop unhealthy patterns involving food, like using it to regulate emotions. We motivate with food by saying “Oh, I deserve to treat myself” for accomplishments. Or we soothe ourselves in stressful times with comfort food. With my coaching, you can avoid that behavior and enjoy the change.

But, my clients still love food and eating out. Developing a healthy relationship with food also means rejecting guilt and coping with social pressures. I can coach you in healthy tactics, like having a snack before a meal out to avoid overindulging or categorizing large restaurant portions as guaranteed leftovers before you even pick up a fork. Your health goals should expand your life, not inhibit it.

Sheila has helped the way I feel about eating. She gives me simple, delicious recipes that are actually fun to make and really easy to make. Her salad recipe with pine nuts and avocado are my absolute favorite.”

Fighting Obesity

As a formerly obese person, I know the constant struggle to change after your body has adapted to a high-fat, high-carb diet. I know it’s harder to exercise when exercising means moving 100 lbs. or more of extra weight. While most diets and personal trainers will market based on looking better, I know from beating back obesity that the biggest benefit is feeling better.

I want my clients to feel the huge burst of energy that accompanies weight loss. Exercising one or two times a week boosts your energy burn all the time. It raises your “resting energy expenditure,” which is the amount you burn going about your regular business. You’ll FEEL like you have more energy as well, as you burn through your energy reserves rather than store energy as fat. You’ll use less energy lugging around extra weight and have more available to play with your kids or pursue your hobbies. I know I felt like I could conquer the world after I gained strength, reduced fat and got healthy.

In addition, I had the BEST NIGHTS OF SLEEP of my life after dropping the weight. You sleep longer and sounder when you get down to your healthy weight. You feel less fatigued during the day and have an easier time getting out of bed in the morning. When we talk about the whole health approach, better sleep might be one of the most important improvements in your daily life.

Living Longer

Everyone knows that exercising and losing weight is good for health. The stats are stark: People with high body fat can expect to live at least eight years less than their skinnier counterparts. That’s eight fewer years with friends and family and less time to achieve your goals and live your dreams. There’s a few reasons why people with high body fat have shorter life expectancies, and regular exercise and weight management can help all of them.

“Over 90 percent of people with type 2 diabetes are obese.”

I was headed that direction myself when I was obese, unable to control my blood sugar. You can go blind, lose limbs, or get kidney or heart disease from high blood sugar. Fortunately, controlled weight loss with a CERTIFIED WEIGHT MANAGEMENT COUNSELOR like myself can prevent Type II diabetes or control its onset and manage it.

Weight loss also helps with high cholesterol, with the American Heart Association recommending obese people lose 10 percent of their weight. High cholesterol can block your arteries and give you a stroke or heart attack. Losing weight may also cure sleep apnea, which means better sleep and less chance of your breathing getting obstructed in the night.

Turning Back Aging

Wellness isn’t a switch that you can flick on and off. I had an epiphany that represented a turning point, but before that was a decade of trial and error (many, many errors) and years of effort. An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of grueling rehabilitation. My personalized training plans target retaining muscle groups that prevent injury. Strength training for seniors keeps muscles and joints properly aligned, builds balance and flexibility, and makes sure that bones are protected. The weight loss also helps, as every pound lost alleviates 4 lbs. of compound pressure on knee joints.
